About the WebP to PNG converter

You save an image from a website and it arrives as WebP, and then the application you want to use it in refuses to open it. Converting to PNG solves that in one step.

PNG is lossless and universally supported, and it keeps the alpha channel, so nothing about the image changes except the container.

The file is decoded, redrawn on a canvas and re-encoded by your browser. Nothing is uploaded, so there is no queue, no size cap imposed by a server, and no copy of your image left behind on someone else’s disk.

What is preserved

Pixel data and transparency come through exactly. If the WebP was lossy, the artefacts already in it are preserved too — converting to a lossless format cannot recover detail that was discarded.

Animated WebP

An animated WebP converts to a single still frame, because PNG has no animation. If you need the motion, convert to GIF with a dedicated tool.

Frequently asked questions

Why is the PNG so much bigger?

WebP compresses far more aggressively. A lossless PNG of the same pixels is simply a larger file — that is the trade you are making for compatibility.

Is my image uploaded to a server?

No. The conversion runs in your browser using the canvas API. The file never leaves your device.
