About the PNG to JPG converter

JPEG files are dramatically smaller than PNG for photographs, which is why converting is usually about size — email attachments, upload limits and page weight.

JPEG has no alpha channel, so any transparent area has to be filled with a solid colour. Pick that colour before converting, otherwise transparent regions turn black in some viewers.

The file is decoded, redrawn on a canvas and re-encoded by your browser. Nothing is uploaded, so there is no queue, no size cap imposed by a server, and no copy of your image left behind on someone else’s disk.

Choosing a quality level

Between 80 and 90 is the sweet spot for photographs: the file shrinks enormously and the difference is invisible at normal viewing size. The default here is 92, which is deliberately conservative.

Below about 70, artefacts become obvious around sharp edges and text. Screenshots and diagrams suffer badly at any quality level — those should stay PNG.

Transparency

Transparent pixels are composited onto the background colour you choose. White suits most documents; black suits dark interfaces. Semi-transparent pixels blend proportionally, so soft shadows come through smoothly.

Frequently asked questions

Why did my logo get a white box around it?

The transparent background was filled in, because JPEG cannot store transparency. Convert to WebP instead if you need to keep it.

Can I convert back to PNG afterwards?

You can, but the quality lost to JPEG compression is gone for good. Keep the original PNG.

Is my image uploaded to a server?

No. The conversion runs in your browser using the canvas API. The file never leaves your device.
