About the Text to Slug converter

A slug is the human-readable part of a URL: lowercase, hyphenated, no punctuation, no surprises. Getting one right by hand is fiddly once accents and symbols are involved.

This converter normalises accented characters to their closest ASCII equivalent, strips everything that is not a letter or digit, and collapses the gaps into single separators.

Accents and special characters

Text is normalised so `café` becomes `cafe` and `Müller` becomes `Muller`. Characters that do not decompose — `ß`, `æ`, `ø`, `đ` — are mapped explicitly to sensible equivalents.

Apostrophes are removed rather than replaced, so `owner’s guide` becomes `owners-guide` rather than `owner-s-guide`.

Length limits

Very long slugs are ugly in a browser bar and get truncated in search results. Setting a maximum length cuts at the last separator before the limit, so a slug never ends mid-word.

Batch mode

Turn on "one slug per line" to paste a list of titles and get a list of slugs back — useful when planning a content migration.

Frequently asked questions

Should slugs contain the date or an ID?

An ID makes slugs stable when a title changes, which avoids broken links. A date ages the URL. Pick based on whether the content is evergreen.

What about non-Latin scripts?

Characters with no ASCII equivalent are removed, so a fully Cyrillic or CJK title produces an empty slug. Those languages usually want percent-encoded URLs instead — use the URL Encode tool.
